Family Knot Series
2023. Cord, cock rings, jade, cinnebar.
The aim of my work is to represent Chinese queerness in the place of honor. Chinese knots are used to decorate shrines, temples, and funeral altars. When I came out as transgender, there was little to no art depicting my community. As I researched my history, I found that I was far from the only queer person in my family—but I was one of the first that was able to live openly as myself. I made it my artistic practice to represent my queer ancestors. My cock ring knot series seeks to celebrate this lineage by placing an image of queerness in a place of honor with the pan chang knot, a historically lucky item associated with Buddhism and ancestor worship.
